Start with your general dentist
Useful when dental health, missing teeth, crowns, gum care or an existing dentist relationship needs coordination.
Seek a specialist consultation
Reasonable for complex bites, growth concerns, impacted teeth, previous treatment problems or a second opinion.
Ask an aligner provider
Appropriate when the office confirms in-person diagnosis, clear scope, monitoring, revision and referral thresholds.
Urgent dental care
Pain, swelling, trauma, infection or an appliance causing injury needs direct clinical contact—not a website form.
Three provider questions that expose the care model
Ask who performs the examination, who approves the treatment plan and who takes responsibility when progress changes. A practice name and appliance brand do not answer those questions.
Also ask whether the proposed objective is limited or comprehensive. A short cosmetic plan may be legitimate, but it should not be described as full bite correction if that is not what it provides.

A provider can have substantial aligner experience without being a certified orthodontic specialist. Patients deserve both facts: actual experience and actual regulatory status.
When a second opinion is useful
Consider another opinion when the diagnosis is unclear, plans differ substantially, extraction or surgery is proposed, the fee scope is difficult to compare, treatment is not progressing, or the recommendation changes without explanation.
A second opinion is not automatically a rejection of the first provider. It is a way to understand tradeoffs before an irreversible or expensive decision.
